Coalition for the Arts

The Coalition for the Arts is dedicated to exploring the intersection between arts and politics. By bringing artists and change-makers to the IOP, the coalition introduces students to a broad spectrum of artistic mediums, and explores how such artistry intersects with political thought, governance, and policy. The coalition also encourages students to reflect on their own artistic potential and discover new paths to advocacy through creativity. Furthermore, participants gain a deeper understanding of various art forms and practical strategies for employing art as a tool for social change through various interactive sessions, which feature guests such as artists, professors, and students alike.

As an IOP Coalition, Arts Coalition does not meet weekly, and rather hosts events approximately twice a month, with many of them being outside of the IOP building itself. Importantly, we embrace a broad definition of art: we want to emphasize that everyone has creative potential in art and the ability to understand art through a political lens—or, conversely, policy through an artistic lens.

Membership in the Arts Coalition will be based on a straightforward application question, where students can opt-in to joining the Arts Coalition on the IOP Common Application. Whether you consider yourself an artist or not, everyone is welcomed to explore the interplay between arts and politics and to foster a community with diverse voices and expressions.
