Institute of Politics Announces Setti Warren as New Executive Director
Dear IOP community:
I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Setti D. Warren as the new Executive Director of the Institute of Politics. Setti brings a combination experiences in public service, a deep commitment to students and demonstrated management skills that will serve the IOP at this important time in our civic life.
Setti comes to the IOP from his role as the Executive Director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at the Kennedy School. He previously served as Mayor of Newton, Massachusetts, from 2010 to 2018 and was the first African-American to be a popularly-elected mayor in Massachusetts. A graduate of Boston College and Suffolk Law School, he began an extensive career in public service, serving as special assistant in the White House Office of Cabinet Affairs for President Bill Clinton; as New England director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency; and as deputy state director for Senator John F. Kerry (D-MA). Prior to running for mayor, Setti completed a yearlong tour of duty in Iraq as a naval intelligence specialist. He served on the advisory board of the United States Conference of Mayors, chairing the organization's community housing and development committee, and is currently a life member of The Council on Foreign Relations.
In welcoming Setti, I am also particularly grateful to Amy Howell for her leadership as Executive Director and for her past contributions building the IOP Internship and Career Services program. We have been fortunate to have Amy’s many talents at the IOP, and we plan to have necessary transition with Setti in his new role when he begins on March 15th.
I am grateful to our IOP student leadership, IOP staff, and Harvard College and Kennedy School who assisted in this search. I look forward to continuing our exciting programming throughout the semester, and I thank you for all you do to make the IOP a vibrant civic hub on Harvard’s campus.
