Women’s Initiative in Leadership Spotlight

Fall 2019 IOP Resident Fellow Alice Stewart speaks to WIL members about pursuing a career in the political arena.

The Institute of Politics’ Women’s Initiative in Leadership (WIL) was created to address the interest and importance of students of all genders and gender identities at Harvard in developing leadership skills. The program strives to explore and understand leadership through seminars, discussions, and interactive workshops over the course of a semester. Previous guest speakers at WIL have included: Symone Sanders (IOP Fellow S’18), Boston City Councilor Michelle Wu, and CNN Political Commentator Mary Katherine Ham (F’17 IOP Visiting Fellow).

“The Women’s Initiative in Leadership is a program that I take immense pride in chairing, as it was the first IOP program I joined my freshman fall. As a first-generation college student, joining WIL provided me with an inclusive and welcoming forum through which I developed concrete leadership skills necessary for my success as a woman at Harvard. WIL is so much more than a program; it is a community of passionate students looking to support one another and learn from each other throughout their semester in WIL and beyond.” – Amelia Apgar ’20, Chair of WIL

WIL Chair Amelia Apgar ’20 and ICS Chair Kiera O’Brien ’20 talk about their programs at the Fall 2019 IOP Community Kickoff Event.
