Thank you to our student alumni, Fellows, students and friends who helped make the IOP's 50th celebration equally memorable and inspiring. From video remarks from President Obama and hearing from current students who are ready to change politics as we know it to commemorating your IOP memories in the StoryCorps booth and touring the Edward M. Kennedy Institute, we hope you left the weekend reconnected with old and new friends and reinvigorated to commit our lives to public service.
The celebration honored the 50-year history of the Institute of Politics with a tribute to its founding director Dr. Richard Neustadt in the video below.
In commemoration of the IOP’s accomplishments during the past half-century, the Harvard Political Review (HPR) compiled the following timeline, which consists of interviews with eight former IOP students and two former IOP directors interspersed with articles from the HPR’s archives to gain a glimpse into each decade of the IOP.

IOP 50 in the News
The Harvard Gazette took a visual look back at five decades of the IOP, sharing favorite photos from the JFK Jr. Forum. Additionally, the Harvard Crimson published a retrospective on the role the Institute has played in inspiring generations of Harvard graduates to pursue careers in politics and public service.
“It helped prepare me for the very partisan political world right now. I am very respectful of people who disagree with me, and I have a record of working across the aisle, and that has served me well in Congress.” - Congressmember Elise Stefanik in the Crimson
