ABOUT US: Civic Nation is currently seeking interns for its ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge initiative. The interns, reporting to one of the team’s leaders, will provide administrative, programmatic, and campus support. The interns will support the work connected to ALL IN’s communities of practice cohorts and efforts to institutionalize full student voter participation on ALL IN campuses. Overall, this is an exciting position for individuals passionate about closing existing gaps in voting based on age and race and are detail-oriented team players.

An initiative of Civic Nation, the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) supports and recognizes colleges and universities across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, working to improve nonpartisan civic learning, political engagement, and student voter participation. ALL IN recruits and encourages higher education institutions to help students form habits of active and informed democratic participation and institutionalize democratic engagement activities and programs—making them a defining feature of campus life. ALL IN strives to close existing gaps in voting based on age and race, as college students are generally younger and more racially diverse than the broader electorate.

Civic Nation serves as a mobilization hub at the intersection of creative communications, community organizing, narrative and culture change strategies, and high-level stakeholder engagement. At Civic Nation we house some of the most innovative campaigns organizing for progress across the country including It’s On Us, Made to Save, ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, End Rape on Campus, The United State of Women, We the Action, and When We All Vote, Co-chaired by Michelle Obama.

2021 Intern Description

Working as a program intern at the United of Women, I have had the incredible opportunity of doing work that is both meaningful for the larger movement of gender equity and rewarding for personal and career growth. At USOW, no matter how small or large the work is, I know that my work is making a difference. For example, this summer, I've been working heavily on the Child Tax Credit campaign to help especially young mothers of color get signed up for the credit, which could help cut childhood poverty in half. I've done everything from researching about the CTC for FAQ pages and briefing materials to curating a list of organizations in 12 states to partner with for CTC outreach. What I also love about the internship is that every day is a new day - nonprofit work is fast-paced so there are days that are absolutely crammed with meetings and deadlines but other days when you can sit back and do some reflection. In the end, I fell in love with the grassroots organizing and ever-changing nature of nonprofit work. In addition, I end everyday knowing that my work is valued by the small, but mighty team of women at USOW. Because it is a smaller team, I got to know all of the team members and learn from them constantly, including communications and networking skills. I am so grateful for my supervisor and the rest of the team for fostering such a supportive, empowering environment that made it so easy for me to constantly want to do better work for USOW every day.

2020 Intern Description

At Civic Nation, I have been working with The United State of Women as a program and fundraising intern. Civic Nation is an advocacy and grassroots focussed organization so every single day my responsibilities vary from responding to emails to sponsors and speakers; creating programs curricula such as zoom panels and summits, and crafting fundraising materials. The United State of Women is a small-sized, female only, female-led team which provides a very unique experience for internships. In my opinion, this structure leads to a more tight-knit team with supervisors that understand your problems better. I’ve learned a lot of skills applicable to working in government and understanding how nonprofit groups function which I think has been really meaningful and useful to my career later on.

2018 Intern Description

Working on Civic Nation’s #VoteTogether initiative is an exciting experience where I get to see a campaign built from the ground up. #VoteTogether aims to put the fun back in voting by planning hundreds of voting celebrations around the country. These celebrations take place at polling locations and are open to everyone–voters and nonvoters alike. In addition to bringing communities together and creating positive voting experiences, our analysis shows that celebrations like these are a cost-effective way to increase voter participation.
