ABOUT US: The City of Rochester serves a population of 121,000 people. The mission of the City of Rochester is to provide a safe, attractive environment through the responsive, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of municipal services. The City will strive to enhance community pride by improving the physical, environmental, economic, cultural, and social quality of the community. In 2021, the City hired the first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director to centralize and catalyze equitable service delivery in our community. Social Equity is a foundational principle, and since 2021, the City of Rochester has:

  • Created a Diversity Equity and Inclusion Plan
  • Incorporated equitable Community Co-Design as a standard practice for engagement to address disparities
  • Implemented Targeted Business and Workforce Participation goals for Infrastructure projects
  • Received the 'Inclusive Workforce Designation' from the Southeast MN Workforce Board
  • Applied and awarded the Global Mayor's Challenge grant
  • Hosted a Harvard Bloomberg fellow to work on Accessible City Government

RESPONSIBILITIES & PROJECTS: We would be excited to host an intern, and would invite them to join us in curating and creating an Equity Dashboard that we would be hosted on our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Webpage.

We would love to have someone who is curious, has an understanding of Statistics and Data Analysis as well as an interest in equity in public policy.

  • Statistical & Data Analysis
  • Foreign Language Skills
  • Webpage Creation

WORK ENVIRONMENT: This intern would be hosted in the Administration Department. This department is filled with enthusiastic and passionate local government practitioners. The office environment is fast paced, fun, innovative and creative. There are opportunities to collaborate and learn from within and other departments. We extend a flexible work environment, with both in-person and hybrid work. We hope that all people can show up as their authentic selves, and promote a balance of work and life. Outside of City Hall, the city offers a variety of social gatherings, especially in the summer months. We launched our first centralized internship program in the summer of 2022.
