This Director's Internship opportunity does not count towards the three application limit.

Working with diverse stakeholders, the City of Newton Arts & Culture Department drives the strategic development of a vibrant arts & culture sector that celebrates creative expression, builds community, showcases local artists and arts groups, and supports economic development.The Economic Development Department works closely with existing business owners, commercial landlords, and business organizations to promote Newton as a place to start, run, and grow a business.

  • Writing Sample
  • Description of economics background, including course list

Program Details

The intern will be shared between Newton’s Arts and Culture and Economic Development Departments and will work on the following substantive research project:

Building a Creative Economy: Analyze the current financial impact of the creative sector (nonprofit, for-profit, and municipal) on Newton’s economy and identify additional steps that the City can take to build and support its creative sector and use arts and culture to drive economic development.

Additionally, the intern may have some other operational responsibilities in the two departments.

Moderate Supervision: Intern will meet with their supervisor regularly but will be given the opportunity to work on independent projects.

Both the Arts and Culture Department and the Economic Development Department are small departments staffed by innovative leaders who will provide a positive, supportive work environment and many opportunities to gain practical experience to the inner workings of local government.

This Director's Internship Host will not host additional undergraduate interns outside of the Director's Internship Program.

Applicants should have a developed skillset in economic analysis and a strong interest in public policy.
