Our office is able to host a REMOTE OR IN-PERSON intern (depending on mutual preference).

WORKING HOURS: There is flexibility regarding which hours the intern works.

INDUSTRY: Public Health / Science / Environment

ABOUT US: Sway is forging the material and cultural dimensions of a plastic-free future. To start, we are designing home-compostable replacements for thin-film plastic packaging derived from seaweed. Imagine if every polybag, pouch, and wrapper had the power to replenish ocean ecosystems and reduce plastic waste — while simultaneously contributing to the sequestration of millions of tons of carbon, supporting coastal livelihoods through lasting employment, and creating healthy soil in your own backyard at its end of life. A material that gives more than it takes, replacing petroleum-based plastics for good. In November, we announced our initial funding round of $2.5M, led by Valor Siren Ventures and joined by Conservation International Ventures, Alante Capital, BAM Ventures, and other mission-aligned investors. We are also winners of the Beyond the Bag Challenge (led by Closed Loop Partners and sponsors Walmart, Target, and CVS) and semi-finalists of the UN Ocean Decade’s Ocean Innovation Prize. Our first public launches with culturally influential brands are set for mid-2022. It’s a very exciting time to join the movement!

RESPONSIBILITIES AND PROJECTS: At Sway, we believe that the benevolent materials revolution — and a true divestment from fossil fuels — will require both innovative materials and radical cultural change. One of our core theories of change is making composting an everyday behavior as common as recycling; we have built a home-compostable material, making Sway packaging uniquely accessible regardless of income or geography. Therefore, we are seeking a Director’s Intern to produce foundational research on Sway’s positioning within the compost and bag-ban policy landscapes, unlocking policy as an avenue to catalyse our impact. Your work will begin with cursory policy analysis on compost infrastructure and plastic bag restrictions throughout the country. You will have the opportunity to meet with environmental lobbies, advocates, and nonprofits to analyze policy risks, opportunities, and potential partnerships for Sway to pursue. Following the initial analysis, your work will take one of several paths, based on your findings and personal interests. This could take the form of a policy playbook, advising us on what pacts we should join, policies we should advocate, and regions we should launch in. It could also take the form of case studies, diving deeply into how our 2022 launches will fit into existing legislation in various regions. There is lots of work to be done, and you can expect a high degree of responsibility, independence, and collaboration as you help build the foundation of our future policy agenda. There are no particular required experiences for this role, but it will be an asset to have experience working for a startup or other small, fast-paced team; leading projects without

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: We are a small team of ten (six in-person, full-time) united by our shared commitment to building a regenerative, plastic-free future. While you will work directly with Russell, our Partnerships & Impact Lead, you can expect to collaborate with virtually every team member, from the co-founders to your fellow interns. Every week looks different, but you can look forward to regular team lunches, happy hours, events, and outings — and very cool merch, of course! Our expansive network of advisers will be at your disposal, and your professional development will be a huge priority to us. With major value placed on inclusivity and collaboration, we have hosted many interns, fellows, and consultants before, and nearly every single one is still involved today. Come make waves with us! (Note: We are based in Oakland, CA, where five of our team members work mostly in-person on a flexible schedule. While we would love to have you here (for at least part of the summer), we also have several remote members and will be happy to find an arrangement that suits your needs!)
