Devontae-Anthony Berry Freeland is a rising junior at Harvard College from Metuchen, New Jersey. A Social Studies concentrator in Dunster House, his focus field is in comparative studies of politics, race, and ethnicity in the Iberian peninsula and Latin America. Before interning at the Obama Foundation in Washington, D.C., he spent the summer of 2016 working as an operations intern at the New Jersey Democratic Party in Trenton and staffing the state’s delegation to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. On campus, Devontae serves as Campaigns Director for the Harvard College Democrats and leads the group’s campaign operations, notably co-executing the largest volunteer mobilization of any college campus in Massachusetts during the 2016 presidential election cycle. During the school year, he plans ethnic and cultural diversity programming as a staff member at the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations. Inspired by President Obama's call-to-action, "Don't boo—vote!", Devontae aspires to a career in the law as an advocate and policymaker for voter protection and the civic engagement of marginalized communities.
