POSITION SUMMARY
HUMAN INTELLIGENCE (HUMINT} CAREER FIELD
Officers in this Career Field serve globally and perform a wide variety of functions to execute and support the mission, including collection ofintelligence via a spectrum of sources and methods; management of the collection and reporting cycle; and direct intelligence support tocollectors and collection operations as members of the following specialties:
Clandestine Collection:
Officers in this specialty operate globally to plan and conduct clandestine HUMINT collection, and report on intelligence information obtainedfrom human sources to satisfy priorities at the national, combatant command (CCMD) and Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) levels.These officers gain expertise in foreign cultures and languages to accomplish their mission while acquiring the skills and technical ability tomanage sources who have access to privileged information vital to the Department of Defense (DoD) and national security decision makers.Service in this specialty requires sound judgment, highly developed interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage projects from the field andheadquarters perspective.
Overt Collection:
These officers acquire information without concealment through legal and open means such as observation, elicitation, interrogation, intelligenceexchange, liaison activities or military source operations. Overt collectors conduct worldwide HUMINT operations to satisfy priorities at thenational, CCMD and DoD levels, as well as enable other HUMINT collection specialties. Specific roles in this specialty include debriefs,interrogators, defense liaison officers and field collection officers.
Operations Support:
DIA relies on these officers to manage, guide, and oversee HUMINT collection operations conducted by overt and clandestine HUMINT collectorsinside or outside of the continental U.S. They do this by generating the collection platforms' operating directives, focusing collection efforts, andenabling collectors' responsiveness to DoD and national security information requirements. These officers
also ensure the production of quality reporting and collaborate across the intelligence community to increase their target knowledge and oversee thepreparedness of HUMINT collectors. Specific roles in this specialty include operations support officer, collection management officer, andHUMINT targeting officer.
