This Forum featured Rt. Hon. David Miliband, a Member of Parliament and a former Foreign Secretary of the UK, and Javier Solana, former Secretary General of NATO, and was moderated by Ambassador R. Nicholas Burns. The speakers began this discussion by reaffirming the importance of NATO and stressed the need for NATO to change and adapt to its present-day requirements. A message repeated throughout the event was the need for Europe to step up and play a bigger role to help the US in NATO actions. The speakers then discussed the different ways of dealing with Iran and its nuclear program, focusing on the importance of diplomacy and the complicated nature of the negotiations that is far deeper than nuclear issues. The discussion on Afghanistan brought to the audience’s attention the forgotten nature of this war, but the extreme importance that a solution, or extrication, represents. Ultimately, both speakers spoke passionately about the topics, sometimes with opposing opinions, which resulted in a forum that was highly entertaining and compelling, as well as enlightening and thought-provoking.
