Join the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School for the 2023 Malcolm H. Wiener Lecture on International Political Economy by Gillian Tett, chair of the editorial board and editor-at-large, US of the Financial Times: "From Tunnel Vision to Lateral Vision; How Anthropology can help us all make (better) sense of global risks." Following remarks, Jason Furman (AB '92, AM '95, PHD '04), Aetna Professor of the Practice of Economic Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and former chief economist to President Obama, will moderate the conversation.

"The discipline of cultural anthropology has often seemed like a backwater in the social sciences, dismissed by economists, politicians and financiers. No wonder: its adherents are often presumed to be like academic Indiana Jones, dedicated to exotic but irrelevant studies in far-flung regions. However, this is a terrible misperception: the methodology and precepts of modern anthropology can be vitally useful for anyone trying to navigate a world in flux, since the precepts of the discipline enable us to do something crucial for the modern world: look beyond economic models, big data sets or balance sheets to understand what is really going on. This is transformational for anyone wanting to make sense of domestic politics, finance, tech trends - or the behavior of the millennial generation in a post-Covid world." 

Gillian Tett writes weekly columns covering a range of economic, financial, political and social issues and co-founded Moral Money, the FT sustainability newsletter. She has been named Columnist of the Year (2014), Journalist of the Year (2009) and Business Journalist of the Year (2008) in the British Press Awards, and received three awards from America's Society of Business and Economic Writers Awards. She is a best-selling author of The Silo Effect, Fool’s Gold, Saving the Sun, and Anthrovision and received the Royal Anthropological Institute Marsh Award and the American Anthropological Association President Medal for her work in social science.
