An internationally recognized medical expert and leader, Rear Admiral Susan Blumenthal M.D., M.P.A. has served for more than 20 years as a leading Federal health official in the Administrations of four U.S. Presidents. Dr. Blumenthal is Assistant Surgeon General of the United States and Senior Global Health Advisor in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). She is also a Clinical Professor at Tufts and Georgetown University Schools of Medicine. She served as the country’s first ever Deputy Assistant Secretary for Women’s Health in HHS and was a Health Advisor to the White House. She also served as Chief of the Basic Prevention and Behavioral Medicine Research Branch as well as Head of the Suicide Research Unit at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Blumenthal is particularly known for her pioneering leadership in exposing the inequities in women’s health and developing innovative initiatives to advance women’s health and the study of sex differences in disease, moving these issues to the forefront of our nation’s health care agenda. Her work has included a major focus on global health including HIV/AIDS, the response to pandemics, obesity, nutrition, and violence and disease prevention. Admiral Blumenthal provides important leadership in advancing global health diplomacy, building international collaborations including in the Middle East. She has been involved in health reform efforts. Dr. Blumenthal has been a pioneer in the government in applying information technology to improve health, building the first federal website on health and several other award winning portals as well as the “From Missiles to Mammograms” initiative that transferred imaging technology from DOD, NASA and the CIA to improve the early detection of breast and other cancers. She served as the health columnist for US News and World Report and Elle magazines and as the Host and Medical Director of an award winning television series on women’s health. Dr. Blumenthal has received numerous awards including honorary doctorates and has been decorated with the highest medals of the US Public Health Service for distinguished national leadership, dedicated public service, and landmark contributions to improving health.
