Spring 2019 Visiting Fellows
Visiting Fellows engage the Harvard community with a condensed visit schedule during the course of the semester. This Spring, Gary Cohn and Sen. Heidi Heitkamp will co-host a weekly discussion on the state of the economy, titled ‘The Real State of the Union.’ Mayors Mitch Landrieu and Michael Nutter will return to the IOP to continue discussions from their Fall study group, ‘Politics, Potholes, and Public Service.’
Gary Cohn served as the 11th Director of the U.S. National Economic Council. As the chief economic advisor at the White House, Cohn managed the domestic and global economic policy agenda and led the successful effort to pass the largest tax reform legislation in 30 years. He was previously the President and Chief Operating Officer of Goldman Sachs from 2006 to 2016.
Heidi Heitkamp served as a United States Senator from North Dakota from 2013 to 2019. She was the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from North Dakota. Prior to serving in the U.S. Senate, she served as the 28th North Dakota Attorney General from 1992 to 2000 and as State Tax Commissioner from 1986 to 1992.
Mitch Landrieu (Returning Fellow)
Mitch Landrieu served as Mayor of New Orleans from 2010 to 2018. Prior to his time as Mayor, he served as Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana from 2004 to 2010. He was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1987, where he served for sixteen years.
Michael Nutter (Returning Fellow)
Michael Nutter was elected the 98th Mayor of his hometown in November 2007 and took office in January 2008. Prior to occupying the corner office, Nutter served almost almost 15 years on the Philadelphia City Council. Mayor Nutter is a life-long Philadelphian, born and raised in West Philadelphia and educated at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
