Maria Antonietta Berriozabal served as Councilwoman of the City of San Antonio for ten years. Elected in 1981, she was the first Hispanic woman to hold such a post in a major Texas city. Her 1991 campaign for Mayor attracted national attention. Although placing first in a field of eleven candidates in the May 4 election, she was narrowly defeated in the May 25 run-off. She is currently serving on the Mathematical Sciences Education Board and previously worked on the Committee on the Mathematical Sciences in the Year 2000.
