Jill Long was a college business professor and co-manager of her family's farm when she defied conventional wisdom by winning a special election to represent Indiana's Fourth Congressional District. Upon her arrival in Congress, Ms. Long was appointed to the House Agriculture Committee and in 1993 was elected Chair of the Congressional Rural Caucus. Ms. Long's political career began in 1983 when she won a seat on the Valparaiso City Council and in 1986 was nominated by the Indiana Democratic Party to run for the U.S. Senate in 1986.
