  • The Imperial Cruise---James Bradley (excellent history that helps understand the beginnings of the war in the Pacific)

KOREA

  • The Coldest Winter-America and the Korean War---David Halberstam (if you read one book on Korean War this is the one)
  • This Kind of War---TR Fehrenback (second best book on Korea)

  • One Man Against the World---The Tragedy of Richard Nixon---Tim Weiner

CIVIL WAR

  • The Half Has Never Been Told---Edward E. Baptist (one of the more important unread books of our time; a detailed history of slavery that is remarkable in its research and presentation. A book that must be read to understand American history)

CHURCHILL AND ROOSEVELT

  • The Last Lion---William Manchester (there are three vols and need to read in order. Great history of one of the 5 most important figures of the 20th century)

PERIOD PIECES OF HISTORY

  • 1959: The Year Everything Changed---Fred Kaplan
  • How Everything Became War and The Military Became Everything---Rosa Brooks (to have a serious discussion of the future of the US military this book is required reading)

POST 9/11 CONFLICT
