Study Group with Eric Hargan: The Role of the Private Sector in the U.S. Healthcare System

The United States is often seen as unique among developed countries in having the private sector be the primary vehicle for delivering healthcare. Yet the federal government, through its financing programs like Medicare and Medicaid, and direct care networks such as the Veterans Administration and the Indian Health Service, is the largest single player in U.S. healthcare. In this study group, we will examine the role of the private sector in U.S. healthcare. Does it have too much of a role? Too little? Is healthcare a unique good that can only be provided by the public sector, or not?
