The years between 2008 and 2012 saw the growth of a populist movement that challenged the Republican Party from the inside. The Tea Party movement brought new energy to the party and led to a huge victory in 2010, when the GOP picked up 63 seats in the House of Representatives. For a moment, Republican strategists saw President Barack Obama as vulnerable in 2012. But in a time of intense populism in the GOP ranks, the Republican Party, still dominated by the pre-Tea Party establishment, chose as its nominee a private equity executive, Mitt Romney, whose top policy achievement was creating an Obamacare-like system in Massachusetts. As it played out, some Republicans sensed a terrible and growing disconnect between the party's voters and its establishment.
