Bipartisan Program for Newly Elected Members of Congress

The Bipartisan Program for Newly Elected Members of Congress is approaching its 50th Anniversary as the nationally-recognized preeminent educational and preparatory seminar for members of the House of Representatives from both parties. Since its inception in 1972, more than 700 current and former members have participated.

Given Harvard University’s remote learning environment during the COVID-19 pandemic, the most recent Bipartisan Program took place virtually in December 2020. The agenda was designed to ensure thoughtful discussions on fighting COVID-19, the economy and economic opportunity, and America’s role in the world.

The program offers one of the few opportunities new members have to get acquainted with colleagues from both sides of the aisle in a neutral environment. To continue that tradition, the first session provided new representatives with an opportunity to introduce themselves to the full freshman class, share their personal story of why they ran for Congress, how they won, and what they hoped to accomplish. The program also provided guidance on the transition from campaign to Capitol Hill from current members of Congress.
