  1. Campaigning 101: Pizza and Politics with Joe Slade White

    Wednesday September 27 - 6:30pm

    Join the Harvard Political Union for pizza with Joe Slade White, Democratic political strategist and media consultant who has been the longtime strategist for Vice President Joe Biden!

    White, the 2014 "National Democratic Strategist of the Year," has helped elect the first Native American to the United States Senate, as well as the first woman Attorney General and Governor of Michigan, and the only woman Democratic governor in the U.S. in the 2012 elections, among several other political upsets. He also worked on the first campaign in the nation to defeat a ban on bilingual education for Hispanic children. He heads his own acclaimed political consulting firm, Joe Slade White & Company.

    Harvey Levin, Executive Producer of TMZ.com and TMZ TV, addressed the forum on privacy and technology. Levin discussed the role of TMZ in shaping the media culture, government and privacy, and the relationship between pop culture and privacy. Jason Chaffetz, former US Congressman (R-UT) and Fox News contributor, moderated the forum.

  5. Diversity Beyond Harvard: Inclusion in the Political Arena

    With wide-ranging experiences in politics, Shaniqua McClendon and Sean Conner will join us to speak about their paths on both sides of the aisle. McClendon served on the Hill for six years, including as Legislative Director for Congresswoman Alma Adams. Conner served on the hill for two years with the Office of Senator Tim Scott, and has also served in a variety of state and federal positions before merging into the world of private sector advocacy with Public Affairs at Uber.

    Jason Furman, former Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisors to President Obama, Francesca Rossi, AI Ethics Global Leader at IBM research, Wilson White, Public Policy and Government Relations Senior Counsel, Google, joined moderator Greg Ip, Chief Economics Commentator The Wall Street Journal, onstage to discuss the future of Artificial intelligence and its impact on the workforce. The panelists discussed, among other things, AI and its influence on the employment rate, how AI will improve quality of life, and new regulations around AI.

    Pete Souza, former White House photographer for Presidents Reagan and Obama, addressed the forum regarding his time spent as a presidential photographer. He focused on his time during the Obama administration, displaying photographs and recounting memories at several key points during the Obama presidency. The forum was moderated by Ann Marie Lipinski, curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard.

    Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum Klaus Schwab, MPA 1967, presented the Malcolm H. Wiener lecture on international political economy. After an opening performance by cellist and World Economic Forum board member Yo-Yo Ma, Schwab delivered a keynote address discussing the interaction between the business community and social progress, economic inequality, globalism, and understanding cultural and social differences.
