Race, Gender, and Mayoral Leadership

In 2011, Karen Freeman-Wilson was elected the first woman mayor of Gary, Indiana becoming the first African-American female mayor in the state of Indiana. Freeman-Wilson previously served as Gary City Court Judge (1995-2000) and as Indiana Attorney General (2000-2001).

In November 2017, Councilwoman Latoya Cantrell was elected the first African-American female Mayor of New Orleans, LA. Cantrell has served on the New Orleans City Council since 2012.

In November 2017, Vivian "Vi" Lyles was elected the first woman Mator of Charlotte, NC. Lyles previously served on the Charlotte City Council (2012-2014) and in 2014, began serving as Charlotte's Mayor Pro-Temp.
