My name is Makayla Gathers, and I am a sophomore (Class of 2026) from Charlotte, North Carolina in Eliot House studying Government and African American Studies. I am the Chair of the Community Action Committee (CAC), which educates members about community organizing and public service, encouraging engagement with the Harvard, greater Boston/Cambridge communities, and the nation as a whole. Over the next year, I am looking forward to cultivating a welcoming and educational organizing space and extending the program's in-person outreach. I also previously served as a member of the Politics of Race and Ethnicity (PRE) Program, the Women's Initiative in Leadership (WIL), and a Journals Liaison for Fellows and Study Groups (FSG) on Chief Justice Cheri Beasley's team. Outside of the IOP, I am a staff writer for the Harvard Crimson and a Senior Volunteer in Phillips Brooks House Association's Small Claims Advisory Service. In my free time, I like seeing theater productions, doing ceramics, playing intramural volleyball, and listening to music.
