Summer in Washington 2017

Summer in Washington 2017

The Summer in Washington (SIW) program, or the IOP's "third semester," hosts political and public-service focused events in Washington, DC over the summer. It's an opportunity for students to gain exposure to the broad range of careers and experiences in politics and public service – from meeting with elected officials to visiting polling firms and think tanks, museums, and much more – and to create a community for Harvard undergraduates around politics and public service. In 2017, the program offered dozens of opportunities to interact with Harvard alumni, explore Washington, DC and connect with peers. See a few highlight photos above.

Here's what our students say

Summer in Washington has been a great opportunity to meet really interesting people and see the inner workings of organizations apart from the one I intern with. I've often found myself inspired and encouraged by the conversations I've had with political leaders through the program. Plus, it really helped me feel like I was right there at the table, in 'the room where it happens,' and on the level to participate in all the cool debates going on around me.

It is not too much of an exaggeration to say that the Summer in Washington was as rewarding as my internship itself. We were provided with exposure to a variety of industry insiders who provided us a window into their occupations and how exactly they got to where they are. Not only that, we were given unique opportunities to experience the city its fullest, including an incredible trip to the Secret Service training facility and an insightful tour of the floor of the House by none other than a former Member.
