Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality

**New to 2018**

The Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE) is dedicated to harnessing the unifying power of sport to advance race relations.

Director’s Interns will be placed in one of the following departments: Athlete Engagement & Sports Outreach; Events & Programming; or Leadership & Education. In your Statement of Interest, please indicate which departments you are interested in. 

Athlete Engagement & Sports Outreach

The selected intern will support and report directly to the VP of Athlete Engagement & Sports Outreach. He/she will work closely with the RISE staff and external partners to drive our commitment to diversity and inclusion.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • - Assist in the targeting of athletes who align with RISE’s mission
  • - Aid in the development of partnerships with organizations and colleges
  • - Build communication and experiences that engage athletes, activists, law enforcement, partners in social good.
  • - Develop ideas for athletes to design community-led solutions for social issues.
  • - Compile contact lists
  • - Create or update databases and presentations

QUALIFICATIONS

  • - Advocate for social justice
  • - Passionate about sports, social impact, social responsibility, and race relations
  • - Commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • - College coursework or comparable work experience preferred
  • - Motivated, responsible, self-starter, able to work with minimal direction
  • - High level of attention to detail, strong work ethic and high level of professionalism
  • - Excellent writing, research, and communication skills
  • - Strong administrative, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • - Prioritizes and multi-tasks effectively
  • - Familiarity with and understanding of best practices for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms

 

Events & Programming

Reporting directly to the Director of Events and Programming, the selected intern will support all aspects of RISE events and programming, including content development, partnership building, implementation, budget management and evaluation of all programs in our space. He/she will work closely with the RISE staff and external partners to drive our commitment to diversity and inclusion.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • - Assist with the planning and coordination of RISE events and/or programming
  • - Assist with the creation and procurement event assets 
  • - Draft event management communications including:  timelines, calendars, reports, etc.   
  • - Support with onsite event management and setup as necessary
  • - Help establish budgets for events
  • - Observe client intake and event logistics
  • - Coordinate outreach efforts and development of relationships with other organizations and build partnerships to extend RISE’s message and generate support
  • - Identify potential sponsors and supporters for events
  • - Assisting with the development and maintenance of mailing, media and guests lists
  • - Drive partner engagement through unique experiences and events/programming
  • - Develop and maintain contact lists   -
  • - Create and update databases and presentations

QUALIFICATIONS

  • - Interest in the Sports and Non Profit Sector; Special Events and/or Hospitality Industry
  • - College coursework or comparable work experience preferred
  • - Motivated, responsible, self-starter, able to work with minimal direction
  • - High level of attention to detail, strong work ethic and high level of professionalism
  • - Excellent writing, research, and communication skills
  • - Proficient with PowerPoint, Excel and Word
  • - Strong admin, organizational and interpersonal skills; Ability to work quickly and efficiently
  • - Comfortable working independently as well as part of a team
  • - Prioritizes and multi-tasks effectively
  • - Familiarity with and understanding of best practices for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms
  • - Comfortable talking on the phone with media, colleagues, and vendors
  • - Ability to travel domestically and work nights or weekends when necessary
  • - Commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • - Fluency in Spanish is a plus

Leadership & Education Programs

Reporting directly to the Director of Leadership & Education Programs, the selected intern will support administration, content development, evaluation and process improvement projects within the Leadership and Education Programs department.

RISE Leadership and Education Programs engage student-athletes, coaches and administrators at every level to equip them with the knowledge and skills to stand up against racism and advance the conversation around race relations, sports being central to all that we do. Participants learn about the history of race and sports, its power to drive change and how they can become leaders in their teams, schools and communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the development of leadership program content across stakeholder groups and platforms (print and online).
  • Assist in the assessment and analysis of participant survey data.
  • Support research projects (e.g. athlete activism, best practices).
  • Assist in the assessment and development of key business operations and processes within the Leadership & Education Programs department.
  • Support the development of detailed project plans and scorecards.
  • Maintain national relationship/contact database.
  • Execute other tasks as assigned.

  • Fluency in Spanish a plus.

DURATION/HOURS

  • 8-10 weeks
  • 40 hours per week, generally 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; could include some nights/weekends
