About the Organization

The Institute is dedicated to educating the public about the important role of the United States Senate in our government, encouraging participatory democracy, invigorating civil discourse, and inspiring the next generation of citizens and leaders to engage in the civic life of their communities. The Institute has an exciting, full-time opportunity for an External Relations intern to join the team for the summer of 2018.

About the Role                    

The External Relations Intern will work within the fast-paced external relations division that is made up of marketing, communications, government relations, and public programs. The role enables the intern to connect the dots between the functions of the external relations team to help build audience, awareness, relationships, and exposure for the Institute’s activities and programs. The intern will have ongoing tasks in each of these areas, but will focus primarily on researching topics and speakers for potential programs and cultivating contact lists for audience-building, and will assist with special projects and events as needed.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on local, state and federal policy areas for potential programs
  • Assist with developing promotional materials
  • Research and update databases and contact lists
  • Develop and maintain internal planning documents, including memos, spreadsheets, and agendas
  • Conduct direct outreach to assist in audience-building for programs
  • Work collaboratively with other Institute teams to develop programming ideas
  • Assist event planning and execution, including staffing of Institute events
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned

Relevant Experience/Educational Background

  • Previous office-based internship experience preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Basic database and project management tools
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite and Google apps


  • A student studying government, marketing, communications, business, or other related discipline
  • Finalists may be asked to submit a writing sample


  • Full-time, eight hours a day/five days a week
  • May be required to work some evening and weekend hours at special events hosted by or at the Institute
