Jay Newton-Small is Washington correspondent for TIME. She is currently writing a book about women in politics.

Newton-Small joined TIME in 2007 to cover the Democratic side of the 2008 presidential campaign, traveling with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. She has also covered the White House, Congress, the 2012 Republican presidential campaign and foreign policy. She has been on assignment for TIME in Iran, Iraq, Jordan, the UAE, Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia, Australia, Canada and Europe.

Before joining TIME she covered the White House and Congress for Bloomberg News from 2003 to 2007, including the 2004 presidential campaign.

She has half a dozen TIME cover stories to her name and contributed to dozens more.

Newton-Small received an M.S. in journalism from Columbia University and a B.S. in International Relations and a B.S. in Art History from Tufts University. The daughter of two United Nations diplomats, she grew up abroad, living in such places as Asia, Africa and Europe. She is fluent in French.
