Senator Barbara Jordan was elected to the Texas Senate in 1966 to represent the 11th District. Ms. Jordan is the first African-American woman Senator and the first African-American since 1883 to serve in the Texas Senate. She soon became the first African-American to preside over the Texas Senate and the first African-American woman to preside over a State Senate in the United States. In 1968, Ms. Jordan was named by President Johnson to the Commission on Income Maintenance Programs and in1970, Ms. Jordan was appointed permanent Secretary at the State Democratic Convention.
