Facebook, Elections, and Democracy

Platforms, Networks, and New Power Technology’s Impact on Politics, Policy, and Elections

When it was founded in a room in Kirkland 14 years ago, no one could have conceived what Facebook would become. Now billions of people around the world use Facebook every month to connect with friends, family members, and the issues that matter to them. Yet since the 2016 election, important questions have been asked about the effect social media has on democracy. Join Katie Harbath, Global Politics and Government Outreach Director at Facebook, and Annie Lewis (’07, MBA ’12), Industry Manager, Politics & Advocacy at Facebook, as they discuss these questions, explain the steps Facebook is taking to ensure the integrity of elections on its platform, and describe how they navigated their careers in politics and technology.
